The following comes from an article in the March 12, 1903 Richmond Sun-Telegram:
"HAS LIVED IN ONE HOUSE FOR 45 YEARS
Herman Ahaus of S. 9th Street is a native of Hanover, Germany. There he was born in 1824. He came to America in 1846 and landed at New Orleans, remaining there one year. In 1847 he came to Cincinnati and in 1848 to Richmond. He early purchased property on South 9th Street, where he has continuously resided. He had a grocery at 505 S. 9th for a short time, but soon purchased a mill, then in the brick cuilding at the corner of N. 9th St. and Elm Place, which is now used as a warehouse by the J.E. Grubbs wholesale house. He ran a flour and grist mill there for 5 years, and then quit the business, selling out to Grubbs. He began the grocery business again at 505 S. 9th and has had a small store there ever since in connection with a bottling business. He has resided in his present home for 45 years. In 1852 he was married to Miss Mary Wulfhorst. To them were born 10 children, of whom the following 7 are living: Mrs. Elizabeth Fisher of S. 9th St., Herman Ahaus Jr. of S. 7th St., Fred Ahaus of S. 11th St., Mrs. Joseph Zeyen, Misses Ann and Josephine Ahaus, and Mrs. Paul Guyer of this city. Mr. Ahaus is now 77 years old and his wife is 72. They are members of the Catholic church."

Obituary, Evening Item, Richmond, IN on June 25, 1908; page 1, column 5:
"Herman B. Ahaus, aged 82 years died unexpectedly at his home, 501 South Ninth Street, last night. The deceased was one of the best known and oldest German residents of this city. He had lived in the present family residence for 54 years.
The funeral arrangements have not yet been arranged for.
Mr. Ahaus was born in Hanover, Germany, July 25, 1825. He came to America in 1845, landed in New Orleans and thence went directly to Cincinnati, where he found employment as a general laborer. He farmed for awhile, and then engaged in the grocery business. After a residence of about thirty years in Cincinnati or vicinity, he came to Richmond, arriving June 15, 1858. Since that time he has been continuously engaged in the grocery trade, in connection with which for some years he operated a grist mill at the corner of Elm and North Ninth streets.
Mr. Ahaus was one of the oldest members of St. Andrew's church. He was always associated in the up-building of the south part of the city and his activity has done much to make that section of the city so prosperous.
Surviving the deceased are two sons, four daughters and seventeen grandchildren."
(NOTE: Error in this obit. Herman lived in Cincinnati about three years not thirty years.)
