Mr. Palfrey, under the head of "Presbyterian Cabal," states the following facts as to the treatment of Dr. Child, Mr. Dana, and others who proposed to make their appeal to the English Parliament: "Child and Dana, two of the remonstrants, were preparing to go to England with a petition to the Parliament from a number of the non-freemen. Informed of their intention, the magistrates ordered a seizure of their papers. The searching officers found in their possession certain memorials to the Commissioners for Plantations, asking for 'settled Churches according to the [Presbyterian] Reformation in England;' for the establishment in the colony of the laws of the realm; for the appointment of 'a General Governor, or some honourable Commissioner,' to reform the existing state of things. For this further offence, such of the prominent conspirators as remained in the country were punished by additional fines. Child and Dana were mulcted. in the sum of two hundred pounds; Mauerick, in that of a hundred and fifty pounds; and two others of a hundred pounds each."--Palfrey's History of New England [Abridged edition], Vol. I., pp. 327, 328.!
page 98
But was ever a petition to a local Legislature more constitutional, or more open and manly in the manner of its getting up, more Christian in its sentiments and objects? Yet the petitioners were arraigned and punished as "conspirators" and "disturbers of the public peace," by order of that Legislature, for openly petitioning to it against some of its own acts. Was ever appeal to the Imperial Parliament by British subjects more justifiable than that of Dr. Child, Mr. Dana, Mr. Vassal (progenitor of British Peers` and others, from acts of a local Government which deprived them of both religious rights of worship and civil rights of franchise, of all things earthly most valued by enlightened men, and without which the position of man is little better than that of goods and chattels? Yet the respectable men who appealed to the supreme power of the realm for the attainment of these attributes of Christian and British citizenship were imprisoned and heavily fined, and their private papers seized and sequestered ! Dana, Samuel
Dana, Samuel, jurist, was born in Cambridge, Mass., Jan. 14, (O.S.) 1739; son of William and Mary (Greene), grandson of Benjamin and Mary (Buckminster), and great-grandson of Richard Dana, who came from England in 1640, and Anne (Bullard), his wife. He was graduated from Harvard in 1755, was ordained to the ministry in 1761 and settled in Groton, Mass. In 1762 he was married to Anna, daughter of Capt. Caleb Kendrick of Newton, Mass. On the outbreak of the Revolution his sympathy with the crown brought him into disfavor with his parish and he resigned his charge May l5, 1775. For six years he supported himself by farming, preaching occasionally, and for a short time engaged in business. In 1781 he was admitted to the bar and became a successful lawyer in Amherst, Mass. In 1782 he was a delegate to the convention whose plans resulted in the constitution of 1783, and in the latter year declined a seat on the bench of common pleas. He was registrar of probate, 1785-89, and judge of probate, 1789-93. In 1793 he was a member of the state senate. His daughter, Mehitable Brown, was married in 1797 to the Hon. Samuel Bell (1770-1850). Judge Dana died in Amherst, Mass., April 1, 1798.

"The Essex Gazette" newspaper, at the beginning of the Revolution, was
removed from Salem to Cambridge [MA], where it was published under the
name of "The New-England Chronicle: or, the Essex Gazette." It was
printed in Stoughton Hall, Harvard College.
Dr. Green's Note:
It is well known that the Reverend Samuel Dana, minister of Groton from
the year 1761 to 1775, at the outbreak of the Revolution, was in sym-
pathy with the Crown. His political views made him unpopular and caus-
ed his dismissal from the parish.
The following notice, by no means clearly expressed, is found in "The
New-England Chronicle or, the Essex Gazette," June 8, 1775:
"Groton, May 15, 1775"
"The inhabitants of Groton in Town Meeting assembled, the Rev. Samuel
Dana offered that to the Town with Regard to his political Principles
and Conduct, with which the Town voted themselves fully satisfied, and
that he ought to enjoy the Privileges of Society in common with other
Members, and we hope this, with the following by him subscribed, will
be fully satisfactory to the Publick.

my power; do hereby sincerely ask Forgiveness of all such for whatever
I have said or done, that had the least Tendency to the Injury of my
