Col. 1: 268); in May 1660 owned near the land then gr. by Robin Hood to Robert Gutch, in Kennebec River over ag. Tuessic (Y. D. 2: 32); d. by 1667. Recorder of Deeds 1654 (Y. D. 35: 52). Christopher Lawson dep. in 1664 that when he bot from James Cole for Clarke & Lake in 1658, J. S. and his w. were much displeased that he had bot over their heads by which they might be turned out of doors. Lists 11, 181 (and w.). Y. D. 20: 22 recites that his wid. (Elizabeth) m. 2d Richard Hammond(4), who had his lands, and there were two sons liv. with them as boys: James, later of Salem, -Harediah-, later of Beverly. In Smith v. Hutchinson 1738, Deborah Burnett and Joanna Williams depos. that they knew the ch. of James and Elizabeth, naming five: Elizabeth. James. Samuel, k. by [p.643] Ind. 14 Aug. 1676 when the Hammond ho. was attacked and his step-fa. killed (Doc. Hist. 6: 149), but List 185 shows him as liv. Mary, taken captive with mo. in 1676.
