GENEALOGY OF STACY SMITH COX
Hollingsworth, *George
The following I transcribed from a newspaper article that appeared in the Union County, IN paper in January 1942 (I have a copy of the original article). I found it in a scrapbook at the Union Co. library.
"PICTURE GIVEN TO HISTORICAL GROUP
Painting Is Presented by Enoch Maze
Enoch Maze, of near Brownsville, has presented a beautiful painting of the Hollingsworth house to the Union County Historical Society. On a card below the painting is the following description.
'This house was built two miles north of Fairland during 1806 and 1808 by George Hollingsworth after his arrival in Union county in the spring of 1806 by an ox team, with his wife and three children, from near Charleston, S. C. The house has five rooms, porch and cellar and uses the latch string on some doors. It was a show place when built. It is the farm dwelling today for a 160 acre farm. His son, Enoch was born in it in 1808, lived his entire life there and died in 1875 in the same room he was born in. His daughter, Mrs. John W. Maze, also born there, spent her girlhood under its roof. Some blessings we miss were theirs, in abundant fruits, had few pests, the river teemed with fish and squirrels were on every hand, with deer, turkeys and maple sugar part of their fare. The river mill ground flour and meal for their table.' "
