The following obituary appeared in the Palladium-Item, Richmond, IN on Sunday, December 4, 1988 (page 4, column 4):
"James I. 'The Colonel' Maze, 66, 1540 Memorial Drive [Connersville], died Saturday afternoon at St. Vincent's Hospital, Indianapolis, after falling ill that morning at his home.
He was a native of Connersville. He was a member of the St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus No. 861, the AMVETS, the Young Men's Institute of Richmond, the Golden Gabriels, and the Stant Management Club.
He had served in the United States Air Force during World War II and had worked 46 years for Stant Manufacturing, retiring in 1983.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Joan Zeyen Maze; four daughters, Janice Hall, Judy Ann Getz, Mary Lou Bottomley, and Nancy Smith, all of Connersville; one brother, Louis B. Maze of Sebring, Fla; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter and one step-granddaughter.
He was preceeded in death by two sisters and one grandson, Timothy Alan Bottomley.
A mass of Christian burial for James I. Maze will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7 at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church. Mass will be followed by burial with military graveside rites conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council in Dale Cemetary in Connersville. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Thompson-Brown-Urban Funeral Home, Connersville, where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m."
