Maze, *Samuel

Samuel moved to Smith County, Tennessee sometime between 1841 and 1845 coming from North Carolina presumably. Enumerated right next to Samuel and family in the 1850 Smith Co., TN Census is a Ann Tumlin (born in NC), her daughter Margaret (age 8, born in NC) and her son George H. (age 5, born in TN). The places and dates of the births of these Tumlin children lead me to suspect that Samuel and Ann Tumlin's husband may have moved to Smith Co. together. Many exhaustive online searches, using variant spellings, brings me to believe that Samuel was likely from the Caswell or Rockingham county areas of North Carolina. The Tumlin and Vaden families appear in these counties as well as many Mays/Maze. Exactly who the parents of Samuel might be is still not known. In the 1840 census, there are no Mays families listed. But, right across the state/county border in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, there are several Mays families. More research is needed in this area to determine if Samuel is connected to these Virginia Mays families.

Searching for Samuel Mays (using soundex) in the 1840 Census of found only one entry, in Caswell Co., North Carolina. It is STILL just an assumption that this Caswell Co., NC Samuel Mays is the "right" Samuel. Samuel's family is enumerated in the 1840 Caswell Co., North Carolina Census as follows:
~ 1 white male under age 5
~ 1 white male age 20-30
~ 1 white female under age 5
~ 1 white female age 20-30

Sam's family is enumerated in the 1850 Smith Co., TN Census (Division: N of Cumberland E of CF River, page 223b) as follows:
~ Sam (looks like "Samuel" and the "ue" part has faded or it might be "Sam C.") - age 36, farmer, land value $150, born in NC
~ Susan - age 22, born in MO
~ Sarah J. - age 10, born in NC
~ John G. - age 10, born in NC
~ Celia A. - age 4, born in TN
~ Joel I. - age 2, born in TN

Sam's family is enumerated in the 1860 Smith Co., TN Census (District 16 page 388 or Ancestry.com image page 3-4) as follows:
~ Samuel Maze - age 46, farmer, real estate value $300, personal estate value $500, born in North Carolina
~ Susan - age 32, born in Tennessee
~ John - age 21, laborer, born in North Carolina
~ Celia A. - age 14, born in Tennessee, attended school within the year
~ James J. - age 12, born in Tennessee, attended school within the year
~ John A. - age 10, born in Tennessee, attended school within the year
~ Mary F. - age 8, born in Tennessee, attended school within the year
~ Andrew J. - age 7, born in Tennessee
~ blank space, then continued on top of next page
~ Benjamin - age 5, born in Tennessee
~ Tennessee - (female) age 2, born in Tennessee

[NOTE: The 1870 Census shows another female with the family (see notes for Susan Robison Maze). Not sure if perhaps this other female was supposed to be enumerated in the space between Andrew and Benjamin in this 1860 Census? Enumerated on the following page, just nine families after Samuel, is a William Maze who is listed as age 30 and also born in North Carolina
