Clate was left an orphan at the age of 12 when his mother died, his father having died five years before her.

(Note: George and Murry are Leota's brothers, probably likely living with her following the deaths of their parents in 1905 and 1908. Her other brothers Henry and Richard are enumerated on the same page just a few families away.)

"Mr. and Mrs. John Dawson and daughter Maxine, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dawson and children Theresa, Harriet, Viola and John Jr., Clayton Smith and family and George Dawson and family of Orange were entertained to dinner Sunday at the home of Mrs. Ann Dawson and son Chester in Connersville.

(Other information stated in this census: It shows the family is renting a home but then shows their monthly rent of $1200. This is, naturally, a mistake. Either they own the home and the value of it is $1200 or they are renting the home and mistakenly reported the home's estimated value rather than reporting their actual rent payment amount).

The following is transcribed from the actual article printed in the Connersville newspaper on Tues. February 21, 1950.

CLATE SMITH, 62, DIES AT FALMOUTH; RITES TO BE AT RUSHVILLE

Clate Smith, 62, died at 9:15 p.m. Monday at his home in Falmouth. He had been ill two months.
Born in Fayette County, a son of Oscar and Hulda Smith, Mr. Smith spent his entire life in and near Connersville. For the past 17 years he had been employed as a guard by the Rex Manufacturing Company. He was a member of Orange Christian Church.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Leota Dawson Smith; five sons: Harold, Edward, Floyd, and Charles Smith, all of Connersville and Gene Smith of Richmond; a daughter, Mrs. Guy Bunyard of Falmouth; a half brother, Casper Jones of Rushville; a sister, Mrs. Ralph Bowen of near Orange; 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Moster Mortuary in Rushville. Dr. J. G. Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Dale Cemetary. Friends may call at the mortuary after noon Wednesday.
