Harold R. Smith, 80, of 1420 Conwell Street died Friday evening in the emergency room of Fayette Memorial Hospital. He had become ill at home and was transported to the hospital. He was a Fayette County native, born in the Orange community January 10, 1912, to Clate and Leota Dawson Smith. He had resided in the county all of his life. He had formerly owned and operated Harold R. Smith & Son painting contractors.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, the former Jessie Whitfield, whom he married March 28, 1934 in Connersville; seven sons, Norman L., H. David, James L., Randy R., Wayne M., Kenneth J., and Thomas P.; one daughter, Mrs. Leon (Nancy C.) Firsich; two brothers, Charles and Verlin; 14 grandchildren; 5 stepgranchildren and one great-grandchildren.
