GENEALOGY OF STACY SMITH COX
Smith, *Jonathan
___________________________________________________________
PLEASE NOTE!!! The ancestry put forth of this Jonathan Smith is SPECULATIVE on my part. I have nothing as of yet to prove this is the "right" Jonathan Smith. The ancestry is based on my deductive conclusions in regards to the names listed for the children of my Jonathan .... first two kids are named after their parents (Jonathan & Abigail) ... another child is named after maternal grandfather (Jedediah) .... two of the other children are named Walter and Ruth. (Not sure if Bradbury is actually their child as he is not listed in the research notes of the genealogy researcher hired by Renee Cannon's grandmother. Please check the Notes for Bradbury on this.)
According to Mariana Bean Ruggles (), the Essex County, Mass. Vital Records CD shows: "Jonathan Smith, s/of Walter, born 10 Feb 1733 (Salem VR 2:302)" ...... This date differs from the date listed in the history book which shows Jonathan's birthdate as Feb 21, 1735 and gravestone transcription book which shows his birthdate as Feb 21, 1733.
With a name like Jonathan Smith even in this time period, this conclusion that Jonathan is the son of Walter Smith and Ruth Fuller is not definite so please do not copy this and pass it on as "real"! Though I feel confident in this conclusion, more research is definitely still needed here.

The 1790 Census image for Hillsborough County, New Hampshire shows Jonathan Smith's household as three white males over age 16, one white male under age 16, two white females, and no slaves. Living just 8 households away is Jonathan Jr. Smith, who I have assumed is "my" Jonathan (born 1762).

Association Test signed by Jonathan Smith of Amherst, NH.
The fact Jonathan Smith signed the Association test would be the same as war service and is so accepted by the D.A.R. Society. The N.H. Rev. rolls have many Jonathan Smiths but none of them give the town of Amherst, although many of them do not have any town in the record of service.
In the marriage intention in the vital records of Rowley; say he was of Danvers and the Vital records of Danvers have both the intention and the marriage and call him of Danvers but his birth is not recorded in the vital records of Danvers.

Page 773 - Jonathan Smith born in Danvers, Mass., Feb. 21, 1735; died in Amherst, N.H., Apr. 1, 1795; married Abigail Kilborn. She was born Nov. 27, 1733, and died Mar. 19, 1801. They settled in Amherst about 1770, where he was an innkeeper for several years.

Information listed on page 14 in the book _Colonial Gravestone Inscriptions in the State of New Hampshire_ (Compiled by Mrs. Charles Carpenter Goss from the Collections Made Between 1913 and 1942 by The Historic Activities Committee of The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of New Hampshire, Clearfield Company Reprints & Remainders) shows:
Buried in Amherst.....
SMITH, Jonathan: b. Feb. 21, 1733, d. Apr, 1, 1795
Mrs. Abigail: b. Nov 27, 1735, d. Mar. 19, 1801
This differs from the info given in the Amherst History book above. However, the Amherst History info was given to me already transcribed and I have not viewed the actual book. Perhaps there was a recording error or typographical error in one of these books or in the process of transcribing the info? It might also be considered that the history book simply reversed the dates of birth of Jonathan & Abigail putting Jno at 1735 instead of 1733 and Abigail at 1733 instead of 1735.
___________________________________________________________
Alternative birthdate given in report from Renee Cannon shows Jonathan Smith was born February 21, 1734/35 in Danvers, Essex Co., Massachusetts.
