John is shown as born in Prussia and Margaret and children are all listed as born in Indiana.

The 1880 Wayne Co., Indiana Census (District 70, Richmond Twp, 1st Ward) shows his birthplace as Prussia (with parents' birthplaces shown as Prussia as well). This census also lists John's occupation as a Merchant Tailor.
